First-ever Congressional Resolution Recognizing National Farmers Market Week

We are thrilled to announce that the week of August 6 – 12, 2023 has officially been designated as “National Farmers Market Week” through a first-ever congressional resolution recognizing the celebration, co-sponsored by Senator Padilla and Senator Ernst, with support from FMC! This is a monumental occasion for all involved in the world of farmers markets, and we would like to express our gratitude to our representatives for acknowledging the importance of markets in our communities. The resolution, S. Res. 324 of the 118th Congress, acknowledges the vital role farmers markets play in local economies and highlights their exponential growth nationwide (from approximately 1,700 in 1994 to 8,800 in 2019), reflecting the increasing demand for fresh, locally sourced food and the significance of farmer-to-consumer relationships. Moreover, this resolution acknowledges farmers markets’ role in bridging urban and rural communities, contributing to public understanding of farming and ranching, and encouraging the adoption of more sustainable farming practices. Farmers markets are also credited with improving health and wellness among low-income individuals who receive federal nutrition benefits, which is crucial in increasing equitable access to nutritious food.

As we approach National Farmers Market Week, we are reminded of the many ways farmers market support our communities. They provide a platform for local farmers, foster healthy eating habits, promote sustainability, and serve as vibrant meeting places that unite people around the love of fresh, locally-produced food.

We thank Senators Padilla and Ernst for their dedication to farmers markets and the communities they serve. As we celebrate this special week, let’s continue supporting our local farmers markets and appreciate their unique and indispensable roles in our lives.

Happy National Farmers Market Week!
