Can you taste the history when you bite into a grape grown in the Golden State? A true California classic, grapes have been cultivated here for almost two centuries. In addition, California grows over 99% of the United States’ supply of table grapes.

Take part in this sweet local history by shopping for grapes at your local farmers’ markets. Seeing these colorful mounds of gorgeous fruit glistening in the sun at your farmers’ market will make you want to try every variety. Grapes are harvested when ripe and can be found at farmers’ markets from May through January.

Grapes are grown in a range of colors and each color has a few individual varieties.

Green: Princess, Perlette, Thompson seedless

Red: Autumn Flame, Ruby seedless, Red Globe

Blue/Black: Autumn Royal, Fantasy seedless, Concord

Choose plump, firm grapes that are attached to the stem. Avoid mold, wrinkling and a squishy texture.
Store
Store grapes in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to one week. Wash grapes right before using. They may also be frozen, separated from their stems and stored loosely in a plastic bag.
