May to bring first Michigan AgriTourism Summit

Recognizing the importance and value of agritourism to the state of Michigan, agritourism promoters are publicizing the inaugural Michigan Agritourism Summit.

The event is scheduled for Wednesday, May 8 at the Hagerty Center in Traverse City, Michigan.

The summit plans to feature educational sessions and networking opportunities, including the sharing of information and best practices from a variety of sectors: farmers, municipal officials, agritourism businesses and other community leaders with an interest in rural entrepreneurship and economic development. It is also planned to cultivate ongoing communication that will benefit participants and the industry, according to the release.

The collaborative one-day event aims to plant seeds for future growth, which can create a resilient, sustainable and more viable agritourism industry for generations to come, according to the release.

“Agriculture and Tourism are major industries for the state of Michigan – generating $105 billion and $3.1 billion respectively – and blending the two provides significant economic opportunities for both the farmer and the municipality,” event organizers said in the release. “Yet, there are often conflicts between local residents, governmental entities and farm-based enterprises in agricultural districts that need to be addressed and resolved.”

Announcement of the event comes during October, which is Michigan Agritourism month.

Summit sponsors include Michigan State University Extension, Traverse City Tourism, Northern Michigan College, Promote Michigan and 9/10 News. Businesses and organizations interested in partnerships and/or sponsorships can email berkeyj@msu.edu.

The list of session topics and speakers will be released in early 2024. Registration will open in February at MiAgriTourism.com.
